  • Description

OSPHO, manufactured by the Skybryte Company since 1947, is a rust-inhibiting coating and metal treatment, not a paint. Its primary function is to chemically convert iron oxide (rust) into iron phosphate, an inert, hard black substance. It is composed of phosphoric acid, dichromates, and wetting agents.

How OSPHO works

When applied to a rusted metal surface, OSPHO undergoes a chemical reaction that converts the rust into a new, hard layer of iron phosphate.
  • Seals out moisture: This new phosphate layer is non-corrosive and seals the surface, preventing moisture and oxygen from attacking the underlying metal.
  • Enhances paint adhesion: The treated metal surface is prepared for priming and painting, creating a strong bond that ensures a longer-lasting paint job.
  • Effective on various metals: OSPHO can be used on rusted ferrous metals, new metals, and galvanized surfaces.

How to use OSPHO

  1. Prepare the surface: Before application, use a wire brush or pressure washer to remove loose rust, paint, dirt, oil, and grease.
  2. Apply OSPHO: Apply a thin coat of the water-thin liquid using a brush, roller, or sprayer. For heavily rusted areas, a second coat may be necessary.
  3. Allow to dry: The treated surface should be allowed to dry for at least 24 hours, or until it turns black. For new metals and galvanized surfaces, drying time can be shorter. Humidity and temperature can affect drying time.
  4. Prepare for paint: After the surface is completely dry, a grayish-white powder may appear. Brush this off before applying a paint or primer.
  5. Paint: The surface is now ready for an oil-based paint or primer. The manufacturer recommends testing on a small area before using epoxy or latex paints.
