- Description
Epifanes Rubbed Effect Varnish is a premium one-component interior marine varnish formulated with urethane-alkyd resins. It is highly regarded for producing a rich, clear amber satin sheen that mimics the luxurious appearance of a traditional hand-rubbed wood finish. Because it is formulated without UV inhibitors, it is strictly engineered for interior use, offering exceptional resistance against scuffs, scratches, alcohol, and aggressive household chemicals.
Key Product Specifications
- Formulation: 42% solids urethane-alkyd blend.
- Sheen level: Lustrous semi-gloss / satin finish.
- Coverage rate: Approximately 140–150 sq. ft. per liter (at 35 μm dry film thickness).

Application Best Practices
While you can technically apply this varnish directly to bare interior wood, master builders and the manufacturer advise against doing so if you want to achieve maximum depth and durability.
- The Build-Up Phase: Fill the wood grain and build up a protective barrier by first applying several foundational coats of a high-gloss finish. Excellent choices include Epifanes Clear Gloss Varnish, Wood Finish Gloss, or Polyurethane Clear Gloss.
- The Satin Topcoat: Once your build-up layers are complete, apply two final coats of Rubbed Effect Varnish. This approach prevents the flattening agents in the satin formula from clouding the deep wood grain.
- Technique & Tools: It can be applied via brush, roller, or spray. If brushing, using a soft, long-hair brush yields the smoothest results. It is recommended to perform a wet sand with P400 grit sandpaper or a 3M Scotch-Brite pad between your coats.
Primary Use Cases: Ideal for interior boat cabins, cabin soles (floors), bulkheads, doors, and trim.
